Discover Gold Mining in Ghana with Illustrator George Butler.
British Artist George Butler illustrates stories of ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances in places such as Afghanistan, Syria and West Africa. His reportage illustrations have been featured in many publications from The Guardian, The Times and Evening Standard. In 2010, he successfully persuaded Anglo Shanti mining company in Ghana to document life around its gold mine.
““The mines were badly lit, incredibly noisy and filthy with spray from the drilling. My page was lit only by the narrow beam of my head torch; I felt that the pressure was off, because there was no expectation to draw an attractive picture and consequently, trusting my ability, the pictures turned out well.””
In George’s view drawing offers “a trusted alternative to photography and film. The sense that someone was actually experiencing a situation first hand, offers a fresh and proven solution to capturing a viewer’s attention,” he says in Drawing the News.
