Jagga Jagga: The Experiential Short Film On Blackness Through The Music of Afrikan Boy
The short film entitled Jagga Jagga, uses the music and aesthetic of the artist Afrikan Boy to explore the unanticipated journey of the Black experience. The film uses archive footage, performance and music from Afrikan Boy’s project, Pepper Sounds to take a journey through the African diaspora, touching on ancestry, love, immigration, war, education and more.
Jagga Jagga is a mood board for an exploration of storytelling, battling huge topics with a subtle touch; this is a film that begs to be unpicked. Director Kakembo says of the piece “I wanted to create a film that takes you on this unexpected journey capturing emotions through sound and visuals. I also wanted the film to showcase a sense of pride”.
Commercially, African influence and embracement is seeing a surge in popularity in music but Afrikan Boy is an artist who always showed pride in his African ancestry. His music reflects his journey and this film reflects the authenticity always present in Afrikan Boy’s music. You can listen to Afrikan Boy’s album Peppeh Sounds here.
