Purr'fection! Doja Cat Live In London
Many know Doja Cat as the mastermind behind the now infamous viral video Mooo!.But unbeknownst to many the American rapper has been “tryna make moves” since 2013 with the release of her first EP Purrr.
Born into a family of creatives, her South African father is a dancer and her Jewish mother a painter; Doja (born Amala Zandile Dlamini) spent her childhood between California and New York. Now based in L.A, she describes her recent sound as “ice cream truck” music. “I make serious music, love songs, and moody stuff”.
Something that was “pure fun” was Mooo!,which came about via an Instagram live. Doja was making a beat whilst wearing the same cow outfit seen in the video, which had been purchased to be worn on tour. She took inspiration from the outfit and just like that – history was made. Following the song, she stayed up until 3am recording and editing the video that graced our phone screens constantly for that moment of time.
Following this period of glory, Doja released a deluxe version of her debut album; the self named Amala. She says of the piece “It’s more of a compilation and I think it shows more of my versatility as an artist”. With an array of songs that span across years she says describes the album as consisting of three phases of her life.
So what’s next for the impromptu rapper? Currently she working on her second album as well as wrapping up her nine-month tour across America, Canada and Europe. Whilst in London, Reform The Funk had the pleasure of catching her captivating one night show.
